The Federal Government of Nigeria has taken a significant step in fostering Artificial Intelligence (AI) with the Nigerian Artificial Intelligence Research Scheme. This initiative, announced by the Minister of Communications, Innovation, and Digital Economy, Bosun Tijani, seeks to provide financial support to AI-focused startups. It aims to award N5 million to 45 researchers and startups to promote AI advancement and drive economic growth.
The scheme is open to academic researchers and technology platforms with proposals aligned with the government’s AI priority areas. The goal is to establish a sustainable AI ecosystem in Nigeria, facilitating knowledge sharing and collaboration in the AI industry.
The application period runs from October 13, 2023, to November 15, 2023. Applicants are required to submit detailed proposals outlining their project’s potential impact on Nigeria. A panel of AI experts will evaluate these proposals.
This initiative follows the introduction of the National Artificial Intelligence Strategy, highlighting Nigeria’s commitment to harnessing AI technology for economic development.
