DeSantis Pledges IRS Abolishment and Flat Tax in 2024 Presidential Run

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis announces a bold move to abolish the IRS and implement a flat tax system in his 2024 presidential bid. Amidst a competitive GOP landscape, DeSantis’s proposal sparks debates on tax reform.

Florida Governor Ron DeSantis has unveiled a groundbreaking proposal in his quest for the 2024 presidential seat. On January 4, 2024, during a town hall event, DeSantis boldly declared his intention to abolish the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and introduce a uniform flat tax rate for all U.S. residents. Speaking to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, he emphasized, “I would eliminate the IRS, have a single rate, and just do a flat tax.”

This move is not new for DeSantis, who has long championed a federal flat tax system. The Governor actively co-sponsored The Fair Tax Act (H.R. 25) in 2013, 2015, and 2017. Despite previous attempts, the proposed bill, aiming to eradicate various federal taxes and dissolve the IRS, faced legislative obstacles.

As DeSantis navigates a crowded GOP field, including former President Donald Trump, his bold tax reform stance adds a distinctive touch to his candidacy. National polls currently show Trump leading with 61.8% favorability, while DeSantis stands at 12.1%, positioning himself ahead of other contenders.
